The dairy industry has a substantial environmental impact, from greenhouse gas emissions, to the pollution of land, water, air, and the vast resources required to grow, harvest, and transport the feed needed to raise cattle.

All this happens before the process of dairy cheesemaking even begins. At Rebel Cheese, every wedge, wheel, and spread we craft is 100% plant-based, which means:

Consider this:

• According to Our World in Data, the average greenhouse gas emissions from milk production are over four times higher than those from nuts per kilogram of food produced (Ritchie 2023). At Rebel Cheese, we use organic cashews and almonds to make house-made nut milks, which are the base of our cheeses.
• In a meta-analysis of the environmental footprints of dairy and plant-based milks, Ritchie finds that dairy milk has a significantly higher impact on the environment across metrics like land use, greenhouse gas emissions, freshwater use, and eutrophication (Ritchie 2022).
